Twin Tube Tunnel - Swat Motorway Project

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through Pakhtunkhwa Highways Authority, has taken the construction of "Swat Expressway", a 81 km long, high speed, fenced, 4-lane Expressway. Swat Expressway forms part of trade corridor commencing from Kernal Sher Khan Interchange at M-1 Motorway and terminating at Chakdara Intersection at National Highway N-45 (Malakand Agency). 

The project also includes construction of a 1.3 km Long twin tube tunnel (each tube with 2xlanes). Tunnel is located between south and north portals from Palai to Chakdara. The construction of tunnel from Shahkot (Palai) to Zulamkot (Chakdara) is has yielded an alternate to improve gradient and avoid sharp curves to facilitate movement of LTV/HTV. Each Tunnel has a clear width of 10.1m accommodating 2 lanes in each and Lay-by width is 13.115m (2xNo of Lay-by). Furthermore, clear height of inner contour is 7m and construction clear height is 5.2m. Design speed is 60 kph and two (02) U-turns are provided.
